There's plenty to take in while visiting Bristol - and you never know who you could bump into either, with many famous actors such as Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Patrick Stewart being locals and comedians Lee Evans and Justin Lee Collins all being Bristol born. Even if you're not looking to spot the odd celebrity or two, there's plenty to take in when you're not relaxing in hotels in Bristol, from street art to the most inestimable art gallery collections and from small independent films to the biggest new instalments in British cinema and television.

The writing is on the wall for graffiti as the last bastion of the disenfranchised,

not only are Banksy's scrawlings now safely housed under perspex and protected by London's council but in the latest scarf booklet from Hermes, a smorgasbord of exploding curlicue letters

are cocooned around the embonpoint of a scrumptious model.

Graffiti is now living the life of Hugh Hefner.

Since its humble beginnings in Ancient Greece and Rome, though my favourite is seen in Orkney at Maes Howe -'Thor bedded Helga' - it has been looked down upon by the snooty beaked establishment

but times change, next alphabet spaghetti will be getting ideas above its station.

Modern graffiti comes in many different forms, from the crawled message in a public bathroom stall to the spray- painted murals boasted on subway walls. The simplest form of graffiti is scrawled message. "Sally loves Peter " or "James was there". Many regard these important writings as vandalism, as they lack artistic merit, yet the point of graffiti is to send as expressive message to the reader, whether it is a political. social and personal view. Some graffiti is used as a territory marker called "tagging". These can often been seen on street corners,street signs and suburban walls. It is simply a signature of the person who laying claim to that area as being their territory. Stenciling is so popular form of the modern graffiti, and is often used to convey political and social messages to their viewer in a pictorial form. A famous stenciling artists is Banksy, with his provocative and thought- provoking wotk that can be appreciated as more than just mere vandalism, as seen below. Graffiti artists commonly utilize spray paint as their medium, using different size nozzles to achieve broader or more precise lines . However, some graffiti artists choose to use brushes or sponges, sometimes combining all three in their artwork.
Modern graffiti does not require that certain style is used. Cartoons, caricatures and portraits are often to convey a message, with decorative text style and interesting uses of perspective. Modern graffiti is true in the street art, appearing overnight on walls, in subways and on buildings. Graffiti artists often paint their murals illegally, working under cover of darkness with a team of sentries to watch for a law point enforders or pedestrians. Because of the controversial material contained in many murals, graffiti is now considered to be a form of a resistance art, in rebellion against common public beliefs and government laws. The ultimate achievement for many graffiti artists is to create their work in places that dangerous to get to, or difficult to paint to. Spraying a piece on the side of a train, for example, is quite an achievement , as trains are often under guard and have a slick surface which causes the paint to run.
However there is a lot of amazing graffiti out there, and many graffiti are now being commissioned to decorate buildings and offices. As an form, it requires not only technical ability to use te tools required and personal opinion.
